HALL AND OATES
The Very Best of Daryl Hall & John Oates – ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED
Although I was a teen in the 80s, there aren’t really much musical greats from that era… new wave, synth sound, Madonna… well, ho-hum… not as rich as the sound of the 70s. There is one group, however, that can bring some redemption to the 80s… Hall and Oates (Kenny Loggins was a creature of the 70s).
They churned out not just hits but great rich and deep sounds. Its a good thing us 80s people have a duo like the Hall and Oates… at least the 80’s wasnt really that much of a loss, musically. The pre-eminent white soul duo of the 1970s and ’80s, Daryl Hall and John Oates ruled pop radio for years with their hook-ridden hits. The pair eventually moved beyond their initial inspirations–primarily Motown groups like the Temptations and Philly soul artists like Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes–and incorporated pop, rock and disco into a sound that managed to be both commercial and soulful The two whipped out some of the greatest songs in the history of pop music, and last week I bought this album at a second hand CD store. I had been looking for it for quite some time and I play it constantly in my car.
How does it measure up?
Read on and see.
PROS: This is, unquestionably, the BEST single-disc Hall and Oates compilation out there. If you’re looking for their big hits and then some, you’ll get them all here. Private Eyes, Kiss On My List, Rich Girl, Maneater, Out Of Touch, Sara Smile, and just about every other hit the band has done can be found on this compilation.
CONS: A best of Hall and Oates without She’s Gone!? IT WAS ONE OF THEIR BIGGEST HITS! Obviously, its absence is probably related to the ownership of the rights of the song, but that doesn’t mean its omission is forgivable. Likewise, this was released circa 2001, so you won’t find the new hit, Do It For Love, on here. With the distance of time, you can gain a better appreciation for things
