Back To The Future: Eric Stoltz

For ‘Back to the Future’ fans, this is a really big moment. So the story goes that Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly in ‘Back to the Future,’ and they shot with Stoltz for a few weeks before it became apparent that he just wasn’t the right man for the role. His comic timing was off, and something was just missing. At the time, they scrambled — re-cast the role with a young, up-and-coming Michael J. Fox — and the rest is history. For years fans have been itching to see some of that Eric Stoltz footage, for no other reason than to grab a peek at what it looked like to have someone else in the role of Marty, and to see why, exactly, filmmakers thought Stoltz was so wrong for the part.

Images of Stoltz filming a couple of scenes have been floating around online for years (see one above), but ‘BTTF’ producer/writer Bob Gale has always seemed determined not to ever release the footage of Stoltz as Marty because he didn’t want to embarrass the actor (since being fired from the lead role weeks into production on a major film is pretty embarrassing in and of itself). Well, guess what? Times (and minds) have changed apparently, and for the upcoming 25th Anniversary Back to the Future Trilogy Blu-ray, Gale and Co. have finally decided to release footage of Stoltz in a behind-the-scenes video that talks about the entire casting snafu.

This is a snippet of footage from that video, and you can watch Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale and Steven Spielberg discuss the “heartbreaking” decision to replace Stoltz after five weeks of shooting below the jump.

I have been waiting to see this video for years.
